I made a list last week of candidates on twitter ranked by how many followers they have, here is an update for this week:

This is not a useful or even intelligent way to judge candidates.

I don't believe Bernard is in any way stating that we should judge candidates based on these numbers.

He seems to be merely making observations about candidates and their use of social media in campaigns.

More followers doesn't necessarily represent more support from voters.

I think traditional door knocking, phone calling and meeting contituents is a more effective use of campaigning effort compared to social media. That may change in the not so distance future however.

People talk about how important social media is, tracking twitter use based on followers and tweets is just one rough way to see who is using social media and who not.

I initially did the list because I was asked to speak on a panel about social media and the local elections.

I will do it again a couple of more times in the election.
